Compost household waste, reduce organic landfill
You can use worms to compost up to 50% of your garbage. What's left is worm castings; a rich organic fertiliser for your garden, veggies and pot plants. Worms can even convert dog poo into rich nutrients to feed your trees and shrubs.
How many worms
do you need?
Be aware that any container that is less than 200 litres is too small for the average family. Worms depend on the amount of surface area and a depth of at least 45cm. Less space means less worms and smaller portions of compost that can be added to the bin.
Worm castings make a great additive to your garden. Castings increase the water absorption and water holding capacity of the soil. Nutrients are available for your plants immediately and micro-organisms work with the plants roots to keep them healthy and water absorbs into the soil instead of running off. When you add castings to the soil there will be some worms and worm eggs in the mix so the soil on your garden continues to improve and be aerated by the worms.
Biobags and the Maxi Air Kitchen Tidy make it easy to keep food scraps in the kitchen without the smell and it even reduces moisture content and the yuk. Pick up the biobag and put it straight in your worm farm to compost down - what could be easier?
Biobags for dog waste are great. Put the poo in the bag for a few days and then bury it in the garden under trees and shrubs. You can also put some it your worm farm. The bag is completely biodegraded after 10 - 45 days depending on the method used. No fuss and it all composts down - what could be easier?
The worms you buy for composting are usually young worms (one month old - gives you more worms for your money). Mature red wriggler worms can be just the right size for bait for your next fishing trip. A great bait worm weighs about 0.7 grams. Check out our Big Reds and see for yourself. They will stay alive for as long as 45 minutes in Freshwater and around 25 minutes in Saltwater. Read more and see our bait packs...
